Through The Lens (TTL) metering of flash is automatic metering of flash light as you’ve come to expect from pocket cameras, and anything firing on “auto” mode to snap pictures.
Fujifilm doesn’t explain exactly how TTL flash metering is implemented in the X-T20 (there are a few ways it could be applied), so for the purposes of this discussion, let’s think of it this way: since your camera knows (by metering through the lens) how much ambient light is being reflected back from your subject, it’s able to calculate how much flash light is required to create a “proper” exposure given the current ISO, f/stop and shutter speed (even though it may be calculating all these elements too, based on your camera settings). Once it knows this, it can instruct the flash on how much light to deliver when you take the picture.
Of course, given that the camera is trying to create a “normal” exposure, and yet often when you are using a flash, lighting isn’t anywhere near normal, the result may not be quite what you are looking for. Oftentimes the result is white(ish) faces in a sea of darkness – though in my experience, the X-T20 does a reasonable job even in difficult-to-expose-for situations – especially if you know how to tinker with your lighting just a bit.
